Macworld 2009

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

Just came back from Macworld. Quick thoughts:

More swag this year. Ended up with a shot glass from Iomega, a hackey sack from Turbo Tax, an energy drink, and lots more. Big theme this year: buttons. Everyone had buttons. Buttons sort of suck.

I sorted through all the bits of paper that were shoved in my face here’s what I’m checking out/want to learn more about:

  • Virtual box from Sun: Like VMware or Parellels but free
  • Wazabee: crazy 3-d TVs and laptops–no 3-d glasses required
  • iKlear: free samples rule
  • blurb: they make books for you, whether a photo book or a novel
  • TaxCut: Got the federal for free
  • Crashplan: The missing peg in my backup strategy is offsite. This or Back Blaze look interesting
  • Undercover: software that will track a missing/stolen laptop
  • Macworld and MacLife magazine: I used to subscribe to both. Sometimes I miss print media

This was the first year that I didn’t spend any significant time at Apple’s booth. Why? Well, I didn’t have much time, and there wasn’t much to see. I’m already getting iLife and iWork, so I’ll play with those at home. I have no interest in the 17″ Macbook Pro. And iTunes is already DRM free here at home. I hope Macworld can make it without Apple at the expo.

So Macworld didn’t suck, but nothing blew me away.

Here’s my top list of Mac websites that give me my fix every single day. Let me know what you use in the comments!
