Prog rock

So I’ve been pretty disappointed in new music lately… I mean c’mon for the most part it just sucks. For that reason I’m getting into some prog rock… I’ve always liked Pink Floyd and Yes, so I’m seeing what else is out there.

Right now I’m getting some more Rush and King Crimson. I hear that early Genesis is great prog rock. Anyone out there have any suggestions?

Whoa. I did not know this about you! Since I used to like Genesis and King Crimson I’ll forgive you ;-) Just kidding. It’s not that I now think it’s bad, I’ve just gotten much more into other stuff. I think it’s great you’re (re-)discovering some older music, and I’m sure you’ll thoroughly enjoy yourself. I don’t really have any recommendations though you might find Wikipedia’s entry on prog rock interesting.

I’ve had the opposite problem from you… seems there’s so much great music, either new or new to me. I should do a post on some of my favorite finds of 2006.

Here’s to a year of great music, old or new!

Oh wow how can you say music right now sucks. You just need to look a little harder but there is some great new stuff out there. There is even some new prog rock if that is what you are into. I am not saying you should not listen to the old stuff just remember that it is not like we are stuck in 1999 with just rap rock and boy bands.

I would love for you guys to make a “Best Of” list. I was looking at the music that I added in 2006, and I’m just not super impressed. Sure, some stuff is great, but I’m still disappointed.

You get your wish! I just posted to my blog. I just posted to my blog.

I don’t know how much our tastes overlap, but for what it’s worth, enjoy. Also, to hear samples of the artists, follow the link to last.fm at the bottom of the post.

    Happy 2007!

I don’t have a blog so I will just have to put my “best of” right here.

So I don’t really have a “best of” list but I can put down some albums that I liked this year.
    In no particular order.
    Cat Power-The Greatest
Neko Case- Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
Voxtrot-Mothers, Sisters, Daughters and Wives EP
    Lily Allen- Alright, Still
Art Brut- Bang Bang Rock and Roll (really 2005 but hey so what)
    Islands- Return to See
    Belle and Sebastian-The Life Persuit
    M. Ward- Post War
    The Decemberists- The Crane Wife
    Beirut- Gulag Orkestar
    Ratatat- Classics

In the last few weeks I have been listening to a lot of new music because I have been reading a ton of “best of lists” and checking the stuff out. But since I just started listening to those albums I left them of my list.

Also check out these sights for their end of the year lists for more ideas:

Bring back the boy bands of yesteryear… ahh the good old days. Now I’m not a music guy but I do enjoy current music more then I have in a long time. Wolfmother, Raconteurs (sound similar) are fun to listen to. Wolfmother was my first iTunes purchase ala a gift card I got six months ago (I still haven’t used the other $5 on the card). But no Michael Hutchins’ or Kurt Cobain’s to fawn over… I’ll keep waiting.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Jessi’s choices are awesome, especially Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan, Bonnie Prince Billy and the new Shins. Pick up anything by The Hold Steady too. Thir song The Swish is the greatest song ever written. For Pete’s sake, put down the Genesis before it’s too late!!!

    Frightening thought…

Super G has expressed his love of prog rock, along with the belief that most new music sucks.
While I suspect he was at least exaggerating for the sake of stirring up some discussion, it did inspire this frightening question that I am asking myself: Wh…

So, … you might like to go to the show??

All I have to say Mike is ….BRA–VO! you are dangerously close to enjoying musician’s music. By the way, Prog Rock is not just known for it’s musical style, but it’s theatrical presentation, so in that way, David Bowie could be considered on the Prog Rock fringe, so to most of you, it isn’t just “the sound of Rush” etc… etc… however exploring different time signatures and tunings are definately tools of the prog artist. So are orchestral arrangements and the lengths of the album equating to entire classical movements. However, for some people, this is too pretentious for Rock, but they are just missing out…

Oh boy … I can go on and on for my love of this music, and you have years of joy ahead of you. I can barely pick a top 10 since I like so many…but I’ll try. (by the way …the music I put on the trippyhippy site is usually music that I usually consider hard to find. Even the Peter Gabriel Ovo album I think was only released in Britain (at the time).

-Yes - Close to the Edge and Fragiile

-Not so much Genesis (for me), but Peter Gabriel. He is an incredibly theatrical performer, and has unique timbral technique. For instance, listen to the album “Security”. There isn’t a cymbal crash in there. It’s all African type drumming my Marotta. You’ll find this is his preference with drums. I think he’s a drummer himself. Also, he created an album based on Middle Eastern and African Music For The Last Temptation of Christ

-Medeski, Martin, and Wood. This music is REALLY difficult to get into sometimes, but when you do, you never get bored of it!! (The beauty of hard to like music) You begin to appreciate the song’s depth.

-Jethro Tull (Thick as a Brick and Aqualung Era)

    - Pink Floyd - Of course, one of the all time greats. Many of my friends like Shine on You Crazy Diamond the most, but I like all of them.

    - When magazines herald “the top 10 guitarists of all time” .. yada .. yada .. I wonder why Frank Zappa is never mentioned? He is definately a guitar hero and one of the greats.

Jimi Hendrix - I didn’t get into Jimi right away when I was young, too noisy, but I learned to appreciate his style. In fact, he has a talent for doing ballads that are “under-rated”. “Bold as Love” and “If six was nine” are greats. Many don’t believe that “Cry of Love” is a legitimate fourth album of Jimi, but I think it is. He was alive for most of it, and it has some great songs … I think “Angel” is one of them, and “Freedom” is another under recognized song.

Anyways …… I shall spare the rest of you …oh! One more thing … King Crimson is way good. The first time I ever heard them was in college and the song is called “Cat Food”. Try to find it. It’s kind of jazzy, but groovy, with psychotic lyrics. BTW, Adrien Belew is the incredible front man for that group. Fripp is okay. :-)

I really like “Illusions on a Double Dimple”
    by Triumvirat - http://www.triumvirat.net/illusion.htm

For a very nice timeline of the progression of Prog, see http://www.progressiverock.com/timeline.asp?sYear=1967

Plus, i mostly agree with Lord Smattersby above. I’d add
“Passion Play” by Jethro Tull and Fripp is way more prog
    than Belew.

Finally, check out the current group Muse whose albums
“Absolution” and “Black Holes and Revelations” are sorta
Queen meets David Bowie and Radiohead.

  13. James Says:

Smattersby, your reply is as long and boring as a Pink Floyd song. Give it up and get some Arctic Monkeys down yr neck!

  14. Kbuckalo Says:

“Three of a Perfect Pair” is a great King Crimson album.
For old prog rock, many of the folks who played with Frank Zappa are
fun listens, such as Adrian Belew (who was in King Crimson), or
the Bozios, I forget the name of their little spin-off group, but
their “Spring Session M” album lightened many a dark day way
back in the, um, well, a long time ago.
